Seizures

Seizures are transient neurological events which can be described by a change in behavior, awareness, or sensation. They are the result of an abnormal electrical discharge in the brain. Epilepsy is defined as two or more unprovoked seizures.

A partial seizure is in one specific area of the brain. Consciousness and awareness typically are nor affected in a pure partial seizures. A complex parital seizure starts off in one area of the brain but then spreads to other areas of the brain. In complex partial seizures consciousness and/or awareness are usually affected. Generalized seizures are best thought of as global electrical dysfunction of the brain often resulting in sudden loss of consciousness and jerking followed by confusion upon regaining consciousness. Your physician may order a CT or MRI of the brain or an electroencephalograph (EEG), or they may refer you directly to a neurologist.
